Algorithms as driving force of evolution
What evolves in evolution? What is stored in DNA? Algorithms.
What do we know about algorithms? That some of them are more efficient than others. A species that receives a more efficient algorithm can dominate other species.
For example, imagine a species that develops even a primitive eye. In an environment where sight helps it survive, this gives its descendants an advantage. A blind animal with a bad leg might die; a sighted animal with the same bad leg might still survive and reproduce.
The eye does not make mutations happen more often. It lets more of them survive. Changes that would once have been eliminated can now remain in the population and become material for further evolution. A new algorithm can therefore change the pace of evolution: it gives a species room to experiment.
Such explosions make no sense if we claim that evolution is purely survival and adaptation. No, evolution is more than that. Evolution is creation. Creation of new algorithms.
